The first thing that strikes you about the Breathkey
blood alcohol tester is how cheap it is, at only
$70, yet it has a fuel cell sensor! This seems too good to be true, so how good is this breathalyzer?
The Breathkey breathalyzer is one of the smallest blood alcohol testers around and is designed to be carried on your keyring with your car keys so its always available to you. We love the size of the Breathkey, its a major advantage over its competitors. You often don't carry larger breathalyzers around due to their size, or you have to keep them in your car and risk having them stolen. With the Breathkey you don't need to think about it, its always there when you need it, and its size makes it more subtle to use.
OmegaPoint systems who make the Breathkey blood alcohol meter are very proud of the fact it was developed by the same engineer who designed the breath alcohol ignition interlock systems used in around 40 states. OmegaPoint systems claim the Breathkey has an accuracy of ±.010% BAC (by comparison, breathalyzers used by law enforcement have an accuracy of ±.005% BAC) which is impressive for a device costing only $70, so how have consumers found it? While the majority of the Breathkey's customers get the sense that this blood alcohol tester does provide reliable BAC results, a fairly substantial portion have complained about inconsistent results (far in excess of ±.010%) when doing repeat tests. This may be due to its tiny size and lack of mouthpiece, which could mean its hard to give consistent breath samples. As with any alcohol breathalyzer you shouldn't rely on it for deciding when its ok to drive, more just as a guide on your BAC % and which way its heading.
Reliability and durability of the
Breathkey blood alcohol tester is reported to be very good, which makes it all the more surprising that OmegaPoint systems don't offer a full 1 year warranty. Their warranty is a rather pathetic 90 days which we're unimpressed with.
Considering its budget price and practicality this blood alcohol tester is certainly worth considering. There's a question mark over its accuracy of blood alcohol content, but its certainly good enough for a rough idea on BAC %.
